MSU Opens Innovative Dining Location in the STEM Building

Michigan State University (MSU) Culinary Services introduced a new dining option on campus Sept. 1. Located in the STEM Teaching and Learning Facility, The Workshop offers a unique service model and menu, creating excitement and value for the campus community.

“The opportunity to work alongside academic partners on this project and be involved in the institution’s history has been invaluable,” shared Gina Keilen, associate director of retail services. “This one-of-a-kind building offers collaboration space for a variety of colleges, and we look forward to supporting the future of teaching and learning on campus.”

Formerly the Shaw Lane Power Plant, which was decommissioned in the 1960s, the STEM building features laboratories, breakout space, study areas and other interactive options. To bring new life into the power plant, designers repurposed many components of the original 1948 facility. For example, they used a four-story boiler as a focal point in the lobby and created art rom salvaged steam valves and machinery covers.

“Seeing so many departments across campus come together to make The Workshop exceptional for our customers is remarkable,” exclaimed Madison Young, operations manager. “It has truly been a joint effort, and I appreciate everyone’s dedication to readying the space.”

Décor and other elements of The Workshop reflect the mechanics and engineering imagery connected to the STEM building and emphasizes the culinary excellence produced by MSU’s talented dining team.

With a diverse menu of options, including breakfast sandwiches, bakery items, grain bowls and paninis, The Workshop appeals to various campus diners. The operation is also a Proudly Serving Starbucks location.

“I’m eager to showcase plant-based selections that are new to campus, and feature items from MSU Bakers and local vendors,” shared Kari Magee, retail services executive chef. “We hope the community will enjoy the hybrid menu of unique cuisine as well as Starbucks options.”

Guests can utilize the Transact Mobile Ordering app to place an order in advance for pickup. Students with a Silver, Gold or Platinum dining plan have mobile ordering included as a Combo-X-Change option. In the app, they can select an entrée, side and beverage to complete their Combo-X-Change meal. The app also accepts Spartan Cash and debit/credit cards. Additionally, select items can be purchased on-site, including grab and go products, snacks and beverages.

Beyond incorporating convenient service styles for on-the-go diners, The Workshop allows Culinary Services to explore new technologies with a self-checkout option.
