On Friday, March 23, Heritage Commons at Landon hosted a Persian New Year Dinner in honor of Norooz, which translates to “New Day.” The event was organized by Culinary Services (CS) in partnership with the MSU Persian Student Association. Norooz is the new day that begins the year, traditionally the astronomical beginning of spring. Iranians celebrate this day as the first day of the year. It’s observed principally in Iran, but has spread to many other parts of the world.
Heritage Commons featured traditional Norooz décor, including a major part of the New Year ritual: the Haft-Seen. The seven specific items correspond to one of seven creations such as the Sib (apple) symbolizing health and beauty. Near the Haft-Seen, a dessert table was set up with Baklava, Fruit Tarts, Persian Trail Mix (Ajil) and more. Near this setup, guests could also enjoy hot tea or Doogh, a cold, savory yogurt-based beverage that is mixed with salt.
The event brought together students, staff and community members from various backgrounds to share in this cultural celebration. CS is honored to partner with student groups to observe the traditions of our student body and help spread awareness of their customs.
