In addition to facing off on the football field, MSU and the University of Michigan (U-M) competed in the 3rd annual Culinary Throwdown on Saturday, Oct. 7. The cooking challenge featured three rounds of competition, with student chefs, sous chefs and executive chefs from each school developing an innovative dish to present to judges.
We are pleased to announce that Michigan State University (MSU) Culinary Services is moving to a new office location. On Monday, Oct. 9, 2017, our team will transition from West McDonel Hall to 1855 Place. Our new address will be 550 S. Harrison Road, East Lansing, MI 48823.
On Sept. 21, Culinary Services (CS) co-hosted a dinner at The Vista at Shaw in honor of Eid ul Adha, the second of two Muslim holidays celebrated worldwide each year. This significant holiday commemorates accomplishment and serves as a reminder of when Ibrahim (Abraham) was willing to sacrifice his son to God, according to Islamic belief. Eid ul Adha is celebrated with family, parties and traditional food.
For the ninth consecutive October, MSU Bakers is supporting National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Gwen’s Bagels. These plump, pink bagels with dried cranberries help celebrate breast cancer survivors and honor the memory of victims. Every bagel is made from scratch and baked fresh by MSU Bakers’ Rita Lyon, whose mother Gwen (the namesake of the bagels) passed away in 1972 of breast cancer.
The MSU Concessions team is ready to take on the 2017 football season, including seven home games at Spartan Stadium. This year, a new Gyro Cart in the south end zone features a traditional gyro with thinly sliced beef and lamb on warm pita bread with diced tomatoes, tzatziki sauce, red onion and crumbled feta.
Culinary Services has transitioned its Main Street restaurant in The Vista at Shaw to highlight a new “clean” menu. Current trends show that diners desire wholesome foods over processed. While there is no one-size-fits-all for healthy dining, this concept removes some of the guess work, allowing the foods and flavors to shine through.
On Aug. 1, 2017, MSU Culinary Services (CS) opened two new retail locations at 1855 Place: Sparty’s Market and Starbucks. Located at the corner of Kalamazoo St. and Harrison Road, 1855 Place enhances the student experience by providing a community complete with revitalized housing, engagement areas, scenic plazas and retail options to fulfill every Spartan’s need.
Michigan State University (MSU) Culinary Services (CS) has been awarded silver in the residential dining special event category from the National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) for the Superheroes Halloween Event held at Hubbard Hall in October 2016. The award was presented July 15 during the NACUFS National Conference in Nashville, Tenn.
Eat at State ON-THE-GO Food Truck is participating in The James Beard Foundation’s Blended Burger Project. The nationwide contest is a challenge to make a “blended burger” by blending ground meat with finely chopped mushrooms to create a delicious, healthy and more sustainable burger. Blending meat with mushrooms reduces calories, fat and sodium while adding important nutrients like vitamin D, potassium and B vitamin varieties.
